Three men sit in a coffee shop
\nand discuss who has the best pain meds today-
\nOxycodone, man, that’s what you want.
\nOne carries a cane, one wears a
\nfatigue colored camo hat,
\none wears about a five day old beard.
\nThey throw back coffee as if it were
\nJack Daniels in hip flasks,
\nnervous fingers tapping, yellow, nicotine stained-
\nyou can see the cigarettes although they’re not holding any-
\nbig sign-NO SMOKING.
\nI pretend to read my book, but I’m really reading them.<\/p>\n
At another table across the room, who is reading me?
\nNo makeup, hair so wet it looks dark,
\nno companion with my coffee–just a book,
\nno diamond or band on the left hand.<\/p>\n
The man with the cane looks up at the same time I do–
\nhe doesn’t return my nod, more like a twitch of the head,
\nso, caught spying, I toss back java as if it were
\nBombay and Tonic in a tall frosted glass with lime,
\nand walk out the door into the day
\ndarkening sky,
