\nlike flies up a ramp to hell.
\nSome fall back and try
\nagain – others just fall.
\nEyes staring but not seeing,
\nmouths open yet not speaking.
\nShaking, trembling,
\nshivering, line after line they file.
\nDon’t question just do –
\n‘Your Country Needs You’!<\/p>\n
A fog descends, an eerie mist<\/p>\n
that the sun cannot burn away.
\nNo ordinary fog is this – it
\nmakes men cough, choke, and cry.
\nBoyhood dreams have become
\nmans’ nightmares.
\nReassuring mothers there are
\nnone, to nurse and protect
\ntheir brave young
\nsons.<\/p>\n
A drifting sea of haze gives<\/p>\n
way to a glowing light.
\nThoughts of home and safety
\nentwined with thoughts of dread.
\nMixed emotions that can’t be
\nfathomed, swirl around inside their head.
\nStrong hands reach out to comfort,
\nlike anaesthesia they help ease pain.
\nSleep is calling – its power
\nalmost stirs them to rise and try again.<\/p>\n
Night arrives, but this is no<\/p>\n
ordinary night – dawn does not appear.
\nCoarse blankets that had
\ncovered keep cold away no more,
\nTranquillity has descended and
\nhas banished the canons roar.
\nPeace is overwhelming, a
\npeace so deep and calm.
\nIt lifts the spirit upward to
\na place not cold but warm.<\/p>\n
